Our Work

Center X works to transform public schooling to create a more just, equitable, and humane society.

Center X's work extends across ten programs: two graduate credential programs and eight professional development initiatives. Together, this work aims to transform public schooling to create a more just, equitable, and humane society.

The Center X Teacher Education Programs (TEP) provide high-quality pre- and in-service education to improve urban schooling for California's racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse children. To serve a wide range of aspiring and accomplished educators, Center X offers three types of programs:  a two-year Credential + Masters Program, a 12-15 month Credential/Intern Program, and a one-year M.Ed. in Urban Teaching Program. Center X's Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) prepares educators to be social justice leaders and offers both a Master of Education degree and a Tier One Administrative Credential. Students engage in 15 months of course work and field-based learning experiences, culminating in a master’s project that demonstrates candidates’ competency to be transformative instructional leaders. Center X also engages thousands of practicing and accomplished educators through a portfolio of professional development opportunities, including five California Subject Matter Projects (Writing, Reading and Literature, Mathematics, Science, and History-Geography), the UCLA Parent Project, a National Boards Project, and a new School Transformation Project that brings together multiple teacher learning and coaching opportunities at a school site.
